About
- Teaching faculty should schedule regular reviews and observations, including the
- expert evaluation performed by the CNS Expert Teaching Assessment Program (CETAP),
- peer assessment (conducted by a colleague) of a faculty member's teaching, and
- reflective teaching observation (conducted by the faculty member) of a colleague's teaching.
- Ideally, these observations will provide a longitudinal perspective of a faculty member's teaching. Assessments should span academic years.
- Teaching assessments should be submitted with the annual Faculty Activity Report. They will go in the faculty member's file to become part of the dossiers for Promotion and Tenure, Mid-Probationary and Third-Year Reviews, and Comprehensive Periodic Reviews.
- For more information on the importance of peer teaching observations, as well as how to implement feedback to get the most from these reviews, please see the Center for Teaching and Learning's Peer Observation of Teaching guide.

More on the CNS Expert Teaching Assessment Program (CETAP)
The mission of the CNS Expert Teaching Assessment Program (CETAP) is to promote teaching excellence by providing high-quality external feedback that centers on continual improvement of teaching.
Every Fall semester, CETAP will contact departments to confirm which faculty members will need an evaluation prior to the upcoming academic year. For example, if a faculty member will be going up for their mid-probationary review in 2025-26, CETAP will follow up with the department in the Fall of 2024 to schedule an evaluation.
For any questions or concerns regarding faculty who are being considered for an external evaluation, please contact stemx@cns.utexas.edu.
