Musical Memories: Anton Nel & Bion Tsang

Bion Tsang is an internationally celebrated cellist, acclaimed recording artist, and Professor of Cello at the UT Austin Butler School of Music where he holds the Joe R. and Teresa Lozano Long Endowed Chair in Cello. Since making his orchestral debut at age eleven with Zubin Mehta and the New York Philharmonic, he has performed as a soloist with leading orchestras across North America, Europe, and Asia, and has appeared with renowned chamber music organizations and festivals around the world. Tsang has been featured on PBS's Great Performances series and earned a Grammy nomination for his performance on A Company of Voices: Conspirare in Concert. An accomplished recording artist, his extensive discography includes releases on Sony, Universal, and other major labels, featuring repertoire ranging from Bach and Beethoven to Dvořák as well as his own virtuoso cello transcriptions. Known for his expressive artistry, technical brilliance, and commitment to education, Tsang continues to inspire audiences and students alike through his performances, recordings, and teaching.

 

Anton Nel is an internationally acclaimed pianist and Professor of Piano and Chamber Music at the University of Texas at Austin's Butler School of Music, where he holds the Joe R. and Teresa Lozano Long Endowed Chair in piano. Winner of the prestigious 1987 Naumburg International Piano Competition at Carnegie Hall, Nel has performed as a recitalist, concerto soloist, and chamber musician with leading orchestras and in renowned venues around the world, including appearances with the Cleveland Orchestra, the Chicago and San Francisco Symphonies, Wigmore Hall in London, the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, and Suntory Hall in Tokyo. A sought-after collaborator and educator, he regularly performs at major music festivals across four continents and serves on the faculties of the Aspen Music Festival and School and the Ravinia Festival's Steans Institute. Celebrated for his artistry, versatility, and dedication to teaching, Nel continues to inspire audiences and students through an international career spanning performance, mentorship, and recording.
