The biology of fatigue: lessons from C. elegans

Dr. David Raizen is a professor of Neurology at the University of Pennsylvania.

I am interested in sleepiness and fatigue in the setting of systemic sickness, such as autoimmune, infectious, and neoplastic disease. This interest was motivated by my clinical  evaluation of fatigued patients. We use the round worm C. elegans as a model animal system to gain a mechanistic understanding of fatigue. Worms sleep when sick, and this sickness-induced sleep is regulated by two peptidergic neurons. In my talk at UT Austin, I plan to discuss unpublished research focused on the mechanism of cytokine activation and release during sickness.
